Young Adults Tent Camping Camp

Image
For over a year we have been talking about going camping, like actual  camping with the young adults we work with. Well it finally happened, and as any good camping trip goes there were some problems which makes a stupid story. Here is the stupid story followed by some lovely pictures courtesy of Clayton who is one of those people who likes to take pictures. The day started warm and sunny, the man who had planned the entire camp was about 16 hours away and had left us with a rough mental map of the way things were supposed to go down. There was just one thing that we forgot to factor... we were going camping. We were waiting at the starting location for some laides that we were going to give a ride to, they were intended to arrive at 2:00 so we could start our 3 hour trip. Unfortunately they did not arrive until 3:30pm already setting us back an hour and a half and putting us in danger of hitting rush hour traffic the Friday before a long weekend. Our next stop was to pick u

The students were on vacation last week and there wasn't a ton to do around the office so we went to an amusement park. Because amusement parks are not as popular here as they are in the U.S. and because we went on a thursday there were almost no lines. We waited for maybe 15 minutes tops and went on all the working rides multiple times! Roller Coasters are fun

Maraisburg Family Fellowship Scavenger Hunt

Image
Mike who is one of the full time missionaries here has recently acquired the task of creating events for the sunday school children of his local church once a term. This term I worked with him on a scavenger hunt.  For this hunt the kids had 3 church member's houses they needed to travel to and once they were there they had to complete a blind maze, an obstacle course or some mental puzzles (depending on what house they were at). They also had a list of things they needed to photograph or collect. If they completed their tasks sufficiently and if they found certain things they could then trade them in for trinkets that they would use to decorate a potato. The team with the best potato was the winner! Here are some kids with there giant potatoes All good obstacle courses start with spinning your head on a bat Counseling some kids after the gospel message Puzzle station "find someones

No Picture update

To be honest when I read blogs I generally speed read the written part and bask in the shining wonder of the picture, therefore I feel guilty about posting multiple posts without pictures. However due to my negligence and the lack of friends who like to take zillions of pictures there have been two big events with no pictures (that I can think of). I hereby declare therefore that I will now quickly sum up these events in a way that might hold your attention (if it has not already been lost) Grace Christian Primary School Camp Many kids, few leaders, my team won, water, sun, triple bunk beds, superheroes Calvary Baptist Church of Everton Youth Conference Taxi ride, township, speaking on purity and trust, not many English speakers, good fellowship

Student Fusion

Due to the fact that South Africa is super excellent and that the USA has a plethora of young people who want to do something other than loaf all summer we have been blessed each winter that I have been here in South Africa with a missions team from the USA. Word of Life New York has a program called Student Fusion, each year Student Fusion takes groups of students on mission trips around the world.  This year Student Fusion sent out 2 teams of people: one team to the Dominican Republic, and a team of 15 people to minister and serve here in South Africa for 2 weeks.  It is obvious that people like pictures much more than words so I will let the pictures tell the story of what we did. But the brief run down is as follows Saturday-Students arrive, Daveyton ministry, Rugby game Inside the church for meeting time Sunday- Church at Daveyton, afternoon with kids, meetings It is winter in South Africa now and that caught many of the students by surprise as they had Su

Holiday Bible Club (HBC) Sandton

Shortly after returning to Johannesburg from Durban we started a HBC at Sandton Bible Church, which is the church that I regularly attend here in South Africa. I was responsible for leading some 5th grade boys and was an actor in the drama. The kids are waiting to go inside to start the day  A small portion of the 150+ kids that attended each day Each day we got up at 5:30am so that we could be to church by 6:30 where we then had our morning devos and a quick drama rehearsal before the kids arrived and we went into a frenzy of crafts, snack, games, lessons and drama that lasted until about 12 when the kids filtered home. After they left we had lunch, a closing meeting, and drama practice for the next day. After all that it was nearly 3:30 by the time we returned home. Although the days were long and at times the kids were tough, it was a blast working with the people from my local church that I would otherwise only see on a Sunday morning. My co-leader and I with

Drakensberg

In April we drove many hours south of Johannesburg to visit the gorgeous Drakensberg mountains. Translated into English from Afrikaans meaning "dragon mountains" were formerly occupied by a swarm of dragons until the late 14th century when colonists drove them away using ivory swords. It seemed to us to be a good idea to go hike there and to recover some dragon fossils. Our group just before we began the hike As we stopped to replenish our supplies (aka get petrol(aka gasoline)) we saw a Ford GT40, which so happens to be my fathers favorite car. The pictures basically tell the story from here. Smooth drive for a while Our destination Happy little cloud Slippery and steep Super safe/fun/scary chain ladders The top was wide and flat Over a mile straight down PS- We did not find any dragons
